Scalp micropigmentation is a relatively new cosmetic procedure for camouflaging bald spots, balding scalps, and completely bald heads. It has been around for roughly a decade at this point though, and out of the various types of procedures which are currently available to address baldness, scalp micropigmentation is one of the safest, minimally invasive procedures. How Long Does Scalp Micropigmentation Last?
Post completion of the procedure, which includes all the necessary sessions, the effects of scalp micropigmentation could last for as long as eight years, but at least 5-6 years. That being said, there are some other factors which play important roles in deciding how long the pigmentation will last. It should be understood that micropigmentation is technically permanent, but the fading will inevitably begin after 6-8 years.
Which Factors Affect the Average Lifecycle of a Scalp Micropigmentation Procedure?
At the very least, micropigmentation should not begin to fade before 5-6 years have passed, but 8-9 years is usually the maximum lifecycle. To understand which factors decide how long the pigments are going to last, just go through the following:
- People with particularly dry skin will find that the pigment is fading (natural exfoliation) faster than usual
- Dry climatic conditions can have similar effects as well, but keeping the skin covered in dry weather conditions can help in making the micropigmentation last longer
- Excessive sweating within the first week of a session (heavy exercise is not an option) will immediately lighten the colors, or shorten its lifecycle
How Long Does Scalp Micropigmentation Take?
The exact answer is variable, as it depends on how many hair follicles need to be replicated, the nature of the replications, etc. Nevertheless, most scalp micropigmentation procedures can be completed in 2-4 sessions, with each session taking roughly 2-4 hours as well. After each session, there will be a break of 10-15 days before the next session can be started. Depending on the medical expert’s discretion and judgment of the situation, each break can be extended to as many as 20-25 days, but that is done only when necessary.
How Long is the Downtime with Scalp Micropigmentation?
There is zero downtime, which means that taking a break from work is unnecessary. In most cases, people just carry on with their regular daily activities as always, right after a session is over. Despite that being the norm, do note that a bit of redness might still be there, and the skin could feel temporarily itchy, scratchy, or irritated in some other way. Wearing a hat/cap/skull cap, or any other similar headgear should keep your scalp from becoming further irritated. In any case, such effects should not last for more than 2-3 days at the most. If it does last longer or the side-effects feel too bothersome, consult the expert in charge immediately.
Why is Scalp Micropigmentation Known as a Permanent Solution?
Like a tattoo, the color inserted into the scalp via microneedles will never completely go away, but it will fade with time. Therefore, micropigmentation is technically a permanent solution to camouflage bald spots or even an entirely bald head. However, once the color begins to fade, a touchup is necessary, or the camouflaging effect might lose some of its effectiveness in time. Post touch up, the colors should last for a similar timeframe to the original scalp micropigmentation.
Although it is a technique that relies on hiding the bald spots and augmenting actual hair follicles as necessary to provide a fuller, richer looking head of hair, completely bald people with little to no hair follicles on their scalp can also get a short, buzzcut look of their choice with micropigmentation.
